Neurodivergence

Neurodivergence Counselling & Psychology in Geelong

At Head Start Counselling & Psychology, we offer affirming therapy for neurodivergent individuals in Geelong. Our psychologists and counsellors provide tailored support for those with autism, ADHD, and related conditions — whether formally diagnosed or self-identified.

What Is Neurodivergence?

Neurodivergence refers to natural differences in the way people think, feel, learn, and process the world. It includes conditions such as autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyscalculia, and others. Neurodivergence is not a flaw or disorder — it reflects the diversity of human minds.

This concept stems from the broader idea of neurodiversity, introduced by Australian sociologist Judy Singer. It moves beyond medicalised language to recognise that there’s no single “right” way for brains to work.

Living with Neurodivergence

Many neurodivergent individuals experience significant strengths — creativity, pattern recognition, problem-solving, and hyperfocus — but can also face challenges, particularly in environments not designed with their needs in mind.

Some common difficulties may include:

  • Sensory overwhelm or meltdowns
  • Executive functioning challenges (e.g. planning, organisation, task initiation)
  • Difficulties with social communication or maintaining relationships
  • Emotional regulation difficulties
  • Masking or burnout from trying to meet neurotypical expectations
  • Support and accommodations can make a huge difference — whether in education, employment, or everyday life.

The Role of Therapy

Therapy can help neurodivergent individuals feel understood, supported, and empowered to live authentically. At Head Start Counselling & Psychology, we work collaboratively to explore the goals and challenges most relevant to you.

Our support may include:

  • Understanding your identity and embracing neurodivergence
  • Reducing stress, overwhelm, or anxiety
  • Building communication and coping skills
  • Navigating relationships, work, or study
  • Addressing burnout, sensory overload, or emotional dysregulation
  • Supporting families, educators, or employers to create more inclusive environments

We use evidence-based, neuro-affirming approaches that focus on your needs — not forcing conformity or change.

Empowering Neurodivergent Lives

You don’t need to “fit in” to thrive. With the right support, neurodivergent individuals can flourish — personally, socially, and professionally. Our goal is to help you feel confident in who you are, advocate for what you need, and create a life that works for you.
